Jeff Nixon has received a multi-year extension to remain Syracuse football’s offensive coordinator, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday. Thamel announced that Nixon’s new deal includes a “significant raise” and will thrust him near the highest offensive coordinator salary in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Nixon previously interviewed for the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator job on Jan. 27. The Texans fired former coordinator Bobby Slowik after their 2024 season, though they went with Los Angeles Rams assistant coach Nick Caley over Nixon and other candidates.
With heightened NFL interest after calling plays for college football’s No. 1 passing offense this past season, SU clearly made keeping Nixon a priority.
Nixon joined Orange head coach Fran Brown’s staff ahead of the 2024 season — the first of Syracuse’s new regime. SU totaled 370 air yards per game as quarterback Kyle McCord put together a season for the record books under Nixon’s guidance. He posted the most single-season passing yards in ACC history with 4,779.
Before Nixon came to Syracuse, he formerly served in roles throughout the NFL. He was mostly a running backs coach, a role he most recently held in 2023 with the New York Giants. Nixon also has NFL play-calling experience, as he took over as the interim offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers during the 2021 season.
