After allowing a goal on a penalty stroke just three minutes into Sunday’s game, No. 2 Syracuse (2-0) scored four unanswered to top No. 6 Maryland (1-1), 4-1, at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

The Orange got off to a shaky start, allowing the penalty stroke to Grace Balsdon. Maryland held the lead for the next 26 minutes, denying all SU opportunities, until Orange midfielder Serra Degnan smashed home her first goal of the season on a penalty corner with 29:44 on the clock, converting an assist from back Lies Lagerweij.

The two teams would play out the final six minutes of the first half scoreless, entering the half knotted at one.

The second half was all Syracuse from the start, as Orange forward Elaine Carey converted her second goal of the season less than two minutes into the second half, assisted by Liz Sack. Just more than 10 minutes later, the Orange added a goal from Jennifer Bleakney to push its lead to 3-1.

With the time ticking away and Maryland’s chances at a win growing more and more slim, Syracuse added one final tally in the 57th minute by way of a Nijsje Venrooy penalty deflection, assisted by Roos Weers.

Regan Spencer played another full game at goalie for SU, saving five shots and allowing one goal.
