Syracuse remained at No. 9 in the weekly Inside Lacrosse rankings despite a 14-10 loss to No. 1 Maryland on Sunday. The Orange are scheduled to play No. 2 Virginia this coming Saturday in Charlottesville.

Against the No. 1 Terps, Syracuse’s offense took time to get going. It went down 4-0 by the end of the first quarter and then 5-0 early in the second quarter. The Orange clawed their way back into the game via goals from Tucker Dordevic and Lucas Quinn. Quinn, in his first career start, scored twice in the last 45 seconds before halftime to make it a 7-6 game.

In the second half, the Orange once again started slowly, allowing a 3-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter that ended up determining the game’s outcome. Head coach Gary Gait, in his second game at the helm of the SU men’s program, said he was proud of his team for staying in the game all the way through and added that it already showed progress compared to last year.

“That’s the attitude that’s got to be a core of what we’re gonna do this year,” Gait said after the game. “That’s what they did today.”

Around the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame remained at No. 4 after beating University of Detroit Mercy 24-2 on Saturday. Duke moved up one spot from No. 8 to No. 7 following a 19-10 win over a ranked Denver team.

UNC moved down five spots to No. 12 after they were blown out 20-8 by unranked Ohio State. And Virginia, who SU plays next, remained at No. 2 after beating Towson 18-9.
