Andre Szmyt finished the regular season three shy of the NCAA field goals record.

After earning the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker and a Walter Camp All-America spot, Syracuse (9-3, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) freshman Andre Szmyt was named an AP first team All-American on Monday morning.

Szmyt is a redshirt freshman who “came out of nowhere” to become the best kicker in the country this season. He currently leads the FBS with 28 field goals, a new ACC record, and is three shy of tying the NCAA record of 31. This year, he also ranks second in the nation with 141 total points.

Szymt is one of two freshmen on the first team.

Fellow SU freshman, safety Andre Cisco, who was named a Walter Camp First team All-American, earned AP Third Team All-American honors on Monday. Cisco finished this year tied with Boston College’s Hamp Cheevers for first in the nation with seven interceptions. Cheevers was also named to the Third Team.

No. 20 Syracuse (9-3, 6-2 ACC) will face off with No. 16 West Virginia (8-3, 6-3 Big 12) in the Camping World Bowl on Dec. 28 in Orlando, Florida.
