A Syracuse University freshman died over winter break as a result of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, an administrator said in an email to the SU community on Wednesday.

Raja “Safi” Aziz, a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, died while visiting family in Pakistan, said Dolan Evanovich, the university’s senior vice president for the division of enrollment and the student experience.

“We have been in touch with his family, who asked us to convey Safi’s love of Syracuse University and appreciation for all the people he met while attending school here,” the administrator said in an email to the campus community.

Loved ones of Aziz’s will return to Syracuse in coming weeks to hold a memorial service for the freshman, Evanovich said.

“Chancellor Kent Syverud and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Safi’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those grieving this loss,” Evanovich said.
