Timeline of 2-hour long campus lockdown

Syracuse Police Department officers and dogs survey the area around Robert Drive in search of the suspects in the shooting on Hope Avenue.

7:20 p.m. – Detectives heard shots being fired on Hope Avenue. The Syracuse Police Department began investigating a homicide on 148 Hope Ave.

Between 7:20 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. – Suspects shot at police on Hope Avenue, police said, and the cops took a defensive stance.  The suspects then fled into Oakwood Cemetery, according to multiple sources.

8:25 p.m. – SPD began looking for two suspects in Oakwood Cemetery on Comstock possibly involved in a shots fired incident.

8:30 p.m. – The first Orange Alert was issued. It said: “SPD investigated crime off-campus, shelter in place. Remain indoors, don’t let anyone in, stay out of Oakwood Cemetery, report suspicious activity.”



8:37 p.m. – The Department of Public Safety information desk said SPD assumed the suspects it was looking for near Oakwood Cemetery were armed.

8:42 p.m. – Centennial Hall on the SUNY-ESF campus went into lockdown, according to its front desk worker.

8:52 p.m. – SPD was still searching for possible armed shooters near Oakwood Cemetery.

8:55 p.m. – Students in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication buildings were moved to labs.

8:56 p.m. – SPD announced the shooting did not happen near SU. It occurred “off site.”

9:03 p.m. – DPS said it had no updates and police was still looking for the suspects.

9:04 p.m. – The second Orange Alert was sent out. It said: “Alert remains in effect, remain indoors, if in class remain in the academic building until alert lifted. All others remain in.”

9:06 p.m. – Police said they believed at least one person was armed.

9:12 p.m. – Students in Day Hall were told to stay away from their windows.

9:15 p.m. – DPS officers were in Bird Library ensuring students didn’t leave, per the Bird Library information desk.

9:31 p.m. – Students in Newhouse labs were moved to the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium.

9:42 p.m. – Police said two people were shot and they were searching for multiple suspects who they assumed were armed.

9:52 p.m. – Multiple sources said the shooting was a homicide.

10:01 p.m. – The third Orange Alert was sent out. It said: “Orange Alert: remains in effect remain indoors until further instructed There is no need to call DPS unless you have an emergency or to report suspicious action.”

10:10 p.m. – Centro buses (including South Campus) were still running.

10:11 p.m. – Police said one person was dead and another shot in the leg in the shooting. They were in pursuit of two suspects.

10:24 p.m. – Detectives left the scene at Hope Avenue.

10:34 p.m. – The Oakwood Cemetery search was called off. A police spokesman was unsure if police had any idea where the suspects were.

10:36 p.m. – The final Orange Alert was sent out. It said: “The emergency no longer exists and it was clear to resume normal activities.”

11:03 p.m. – Despite the emergency being called off via Orange Alert, SPD said it did not have the suspects in custody.

11:44 p.m. – DPS Chief Bobby Maldonado released a statement to the SU community saying DPS acted with an “abundance of caution.”

11:50 p.m. – SPD confirmed that the deceased victim was a 15-year-old found on the rear porch of the residence, and the second victim was a 17-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim was transported to Upstate University Hospital where he was treated with non-life threatening injuries.
