Syracuse shuts out Providence, 4-0, for 2nd win of season

Syracuse (2-3) registered its first shutout of the year against Providence (0-5, 0-1 Hockey East) on Sunday afternoon, firing a season-high 38 shots and beating the Friars, 4-0.

The Orange took an early lead in the first period when forward Jessica Sibley scored her first goal of the season six minutes into the game. Syracuse’s Morgan Blank found the net after the first intermission, giving the Orange a 2-0 lead with 17:25 remaining in the second period.

Senior Nicole Ferrara had her fourth consecutive game with a goal, finding the net with nine minutes left in the second period. SU had fired 30 shots at Providence goalie Madison Myers by the second intermission.

While SU only had eight shots in the third period, it didn’t stop the scoring. Sophomore Emily Costales capped off Syracuse’s strong performance with her second goal of the season, which came with just under five minutes remaining.

Senior Jenn Gilligan had her third shutout as a member of the Orange, making 10 saves against the Friars.

Four of Syracuse’s starting five (Stephanie Grossi, Nicole Renault, Ferrara and Melissa Piacentini) each had a point in Sunday’s victory. Megan Quinn and Larissa Martyniuk led the Orange with two points apiece.

The Orange will return to Tennity Ice Pavilion on Wednesday, facing its first conference opponent, RIT, at 7 P.M. SU lost to RIT in the College Hockey America championship game last season.
