M Street Pizza opens, try it for a good slice

Say goodbye to gelato and hello to brick oven pizza. The former Crepe & Gelato Boulevard, located at 113 Marshall St., is now M Street Pizza and is open for business.
I grew up eating pizza at Cosmo’s after football games and was leery of a thin-crust pizza restaurant invading Marshall Street. It turns out that I was wrong. M Street Pizza is the new spot for a good slice.
M Street Pizza is co-owned by SU alumni Gregory Allen and Dave Jacobs. Jacobs also owns Shirt World on Marshall Street.
When I walked in for lunch on Wednesday, the shop was empty. I was surprised that there were not more people there. The pizzeria features an assortment of New York- style, thin crust pizzas. Their signature slice is the Philly slice, which has a Cheez Whiz base instead of a sauce.
All of their dough is homemade and hand-tossed. The pizzas are made in a double brick oven that has a brick top and bottom. This cooks the pizza evenly. The employees were friendly and helped me choose which slices to order. I was stuck between the meat lover’s slice and the veggie garlic slice, so I decided to get both.
First, I tried the veggie garlic. It has a garlic base and is topped with broccoli, peppers, onion and mushrooms. The vegetables were a great addition. I thought it was tasty and had the perfect amount of garlic. I liked the fact that there was no sauce because it was light but still satisfying. It had great crunch to it and I didn’t feel too full after eating it. I did have to wipe the grease off of the top of it, but I would definitely order it again.
Next, I tried the meat lover’s slice. This is a protein-packed slice and has a red sauce base. It is filled with pepperoni, sausage, bacon and ham. I didn’t love it because the meat presence was too overwhelming for my palate to handle. I thought it was too salty and would have been easier to digest with less meat.
M Street Pizza is located in between Pita Pit and Calio’s. The theme of the pizzeria is Syracuse Basketball and the walls are filled with pictures of former players. All of the employees wear Syracuse T-shirts and caps to show school pride. There is an area for self-seating, along with flat-screen TVs. It’s a cool atmosphere for SU students to watch a game while enjoying a slice.
The pizzeria will soon be offering meatball sandwiches in addition to individual pizza slices and pies, the owners said. For dessert, it will be serving thick cookies that have the consistency of cookie dough.
All of the full pies are one size — 20 inches. M Street Pizza does not offer a student discount; however, they do have an all day/all night special, which includes two cheese slices and a can of soda for $5. The pizzeria is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.
Everything on the menu is reasonably priced and has a similar price point to the other establishments on Marshall Street.
Though most of you are probably thinking we already have pizza joints in town and are locals at either Acropolis or Varsity, this new place is definitely worth a try.
M Street Pizza can be reached at 315- 928- 6835 and its website is www.m-streetpizza.net. They hope to start delivering in about two weeks.
